Wilhelm's Portland Mausoleum

120 Years of Compassionate Care

Welcome to Wilhelm's Portland Memorial Mausoleum, a sanctuary where we pay homage to a rich history. Originating as the pioneering crematory west of the Mississippi River, The Portland Cremation Association, we laid our cornerstone in the historic chapel on February 5, 1901. Today, Wilhelm’s spans an expansive 2.5 city blocks, a testament to generations of families entrusting their loved ones to our care. Rising eight stories tall and offering seven miles of serene interment space, Wilhelm's Portland Memorial proudly stands as the West Coast's largest mausoleum. Immerse yourself in a world of beauty as you encounter over 30 exquisite pieces of antique stained-glass art, meticulously crafted and installed by renowned artists, including the Povey Brothers Gerlach and Louis C. Tiffany. Marvel at the walls adorned with marble facades from 5 continents, each telling its own unique story over the last 90 years. Among the cherished statues is a breathtaking replica of Michelangelo's "La Pieta," weighing nearly 7,000 lbs and sourced from the same quarry as the original masterpiece. Within the mausoleum lies the renowned Rae Room, the final resting place of George Rae, a prominent lumber mill owner, and his wife, Elizabeth Rae. Encased in Italian hand-carved marble sarcophagi with solid bronze coffins, the room is adorned with exquisite granite, marble, and stained glass. The Rae Room, featuring a once-a-year public opening on Memorial Day, stands as a testament to Wilhelm's commitment to preserving the vision of local citizens who founded Portland Memorial over a century ago.
